What's a Website & Why Should I Get One?

Simply put, a website is a place you visit on the internet to explore, learn, and connect with information or other people. It might be as simple as reading an article or as interactive as shopping, watching videos, or chatting with others. We experience the internet through websites, whether that means scrolling through social media, watching funny videos, or finding someone to call for an emergency plumbing or electrical job. With that in mind, having your own website isn't just helpful, it's essential.

While many platforms and services may seem dominant right now, things can change quickly. You never truly know what might happen to a platform where you host your business or personal content. We have seen companies like Adobe face backlash over their terms of service, and Twitter undergo a major transformation after rebranding to X under new leadership. Time and again, users are asked to accept terms they may not fully understand or agree with.

When you rely solely on these platforms, you are ultimately at their mercy. They can change their algorithms, restrict your access, or even shut down entirely. If that happens, everything you have built, including your audience, your content, and your presence, can disappear overnight.

The internet moves fast, and much of it is out of your control. So what can you do about it? How can you take control? Having your own website solves two major problems.

  1. Websites are timeless. No matter what new platform rises or falls, having a website has remained a reliable and relevant way to maintain your presence online.
  2. It belongs to you. Platforms like GitHub, LinkedIn, Twitter, X, and Google are not yours. When you own your website, it is your space. Changes happen only when you decide they should, or not at all.
